What does foundation really look like? 10 pts ASAP?

Does it really look how it does in pictures (all perfect and flawless)? Or does it look cakey? When I apply my foundation it looks cakey. What foundation or tinted moisturizer should I use to avoid looking cakey and going more towards the dewy look? I have combo skin and I'm tan.
